
The Vavuniya National College of Education was established on 18th October 1993 by the State Minister of Education, Mrs. Rajamanohari Pulendran, under the guidance of His Excellency Dingiri Banda Wijetunga, the then President of Sri Lanka.
Since its establishment, the college has functioned as a central institution for the development of teacher education in Sri Lanka, contributing significantly to the preparation of professionally qualified teachers for the national education system.
The institution has been guided by a succession of dedicated Presidents who have contributed to its steady growth and development.
For more than three decades, the Vavuniya National College of Education has continued its commitment to excellence in teacher education, making a valuable contribution to the development of Sri Lanka’s education system through quality training, academic discipline, and professional values.

The college is situated on a 56-acre campus in the village of Poonthoddam, approximately 4 km from Vavuniya town. The location provides a peaceful and suitable environment for academic learning, professional training, and student development.
Initially launched with limited facilities, the Vavuniya National College of Education has gradually evolved into an important centre for teacher education in Sri Lanka. Over the years, the institution has expanded its academic programmes, infrastructure, and human resources to meet the changing needs of the national education sector.
