The Vavuniya National College of Education (VNCoE) is a government institution under the Ministry of Education, functioning in affiliation with the National Institute of Education (NIE).
Located in Poonthoddam, Vavuniya, it serves as one of Sri Lanka’s leading teacher training colleges, offering the National Diploma in Teaching (NDT) programme to prepare qualified educators for primary and secondary schools.

VNCoE conducts the National Diploma in Teaching (NDT) – a 3-year pre-service programme that combines theory, practicum, and field-based learning. Students choose from a range of disciplines, gaining the knowledge and skills to become competent, professional teachers.
Focuses on the foundations of early childhood and primary teaching. Trainees learn curriculum planning, classroom management, literacy, and numeracy strategies to nurture young learners effectively.
Prepares teachers to develop advanced skills in Tamil, Sinhala, and English, using modern pedagogy and effective assessment strategies for all education levels
Focuses on moral, ethical, and cultural education. Trainees learn how to teach values, ethics, and social responsibility, supporting students’ personal and community development.
Trains teachers to foster creativity, arts, and physical development. Includes music, drama, visual arts, and sports education to encourage holistic growth of students.
Develops competence in using technology in classrooms. Covers digital tools, e-learning resources, coding basics, and ICT integration to enhance teaching and learning outcomes.
Equips future educators with subject knowledge and practical teaching techniques in mathematics and science. Emphasizes critical thinking, experimentation, and problem-solving skills for students.
